Astra Engineering
Expert Windpost Fabrication
At Astra Engineering, we have an experienced and dedicated team and pride ourselves on providing fast turnarounds while ensuring that you’re more than satisfied with the outcome. One of the many quality services we offer is windpost fabrication – so if you work in the construction industry, then we’re here to help you get the best quality windposts in the country.
Our specialist team are committed to providing you with the best of the best steel and other metal fabrications.
We provide expert experience when it comes to manufacturing steel structures such as windposts, and we use tried and tested professional techniques to cut and bend steel to create structures of all complexities, sizes, and shapes. As well as windposts, we manufacture structures such as large scale corporate frame buildings ready to be erected, as well as smaller structures such as gates or construction equipment.
These Windposts can be created using different types of steel, but we typically use grade s275 in either hot or cold finished mild steel. If you have different requirements, then don’t worry – we can source a wide variety of materials and grades that we can manufacture to reach and exceed your requirements.
Although we specialise in steel fabrication, our skilled and experienced team have perfected the art of fabricating other materials such as metal and aluminium – so we are your go-to for a variety of different structures. We use the latest technology to help you construct whichever structure you require – and we’ll never compromise on quality.
Part of our quality assurance involves our prime metal finishing service. We coat the metal in certain substances to limit the effects of corrosion and improve the appearance of the metal, so it remains shiny and spotless for long periods of time. We understand that one size does not fit all – which is why we create bespoke designs using a variety of expert fabrication techniques.

What Is A Windpost?
Windposts are regularly used by those who work in the construction industry, but people in other professions may come across them every so often. They’re used when constructing masonry walls to increase the lateral stability and strength of the structure, as well as to protect the masonry panelling against and external forces such as wind or handrail loads.
The majority of windposts are constructed using mild steel, which is the metal we use to create windposts at Astra Engineering. The mild steel is typically supported at the head and foot between the floor slab levels. When it comes to cavity walls, windposts are generally fixed in the inner and outer wall leaves using specialist wall ties that are fixed in certain spots. In order to determine where they are fixed, an engineer will take time to make accurate calculations and measurements to ensure that no mistakes are made.
However, you can also install windposts within the inner leaf of blockwork, as well as within the wall cavity itself. This is effective and leaves the blockwork undisturbed – and the best part is that it is hidden inside the structure, so not much extra work has to be completed to hide the post. A C-type windpost is when a windpost is installed within the cavity. This windpost design is often used in masonry panels that aren’t subject to heavy wind loadings. However, a more affordable option would be L-type windposts.
These are designed to be used where the wind loadings are expected to be higher than usual – as well as when the width of the cavities means that C-type windposts won’t be as effective. A U-type windpost is designed to fit within the wall cavity and typically spans between the floor structures.
Like with a C-type windpost, U-type windposts leave the cavity wall’s inner leaf completely undisturbed. We can create U-type windposts in shorter lengths if needed for parapets or underneath windows. Windposts are necessary for the construction industry and are a reliable alternative to reinforced concrete or steel columns. They are also a cheaper option and require much less time to construct and install. Additionally, they are a great way of providing structural support, strength, and stability where there are large zones of cladding, as well as where there are multiple window apertures in a masonry panel.
